Hintergrundinformation
Der Gestaltungsauftrag bestand darin, einen Schriftzug sowie die Beschriftung der Zugänge aus Profilbuchstaben in Form einer technisch modernen und energetisch nachhaltigen Leuchtschrift (mindestens 80% Einsparung bei gleicher Helligkeit) für die Außenbeschriftung des Augsburger Curt-Frenzel-Stadions (CFS) im Zuge der Modernisierung (Umbau des offenen Stadions zu einer Halle) zu finden. Das Curt-Frenzel-Stadion ist sowohl das Wintersportzentrum der Stadt Augsburg als auch ein Stadion der Deutschen Eishockey Liga, in der der Eishockey-Club »Augsburger Panther« seine Heimspiele austrägt.
Der Stadionname erinnert an den Verleger der Augsburger Allgemeinen Zeitung »Curt Frenzel« (1900–1970), der langjähriger Vorsitzender des Augsburger Eislaufvereins (AEV) und ein großer Förderer des Augsburger Eishockeysports war. 1971 wurde das Stadion nach ihm benannt. Betreiber des CFS ist die Stadt Augsburg.
Das CFS ist in seiner Bauform ein nüchterner, schlichter Industriezweckbau. Die Außenformen des Stadions basieren primär auf den geometrischen Formen Drei- und Viereck. Gleiches gilt für die Struktur der Außenverkleidung sowie für die nächtliche Lichtinstallation und das dadurch sichtbare Montagegitter unterhalb der dann transparenten Außenverkleidung.
Der neue Schriftzug des CFS besteht aus Majuskeln einer konstruierten Grotesk, die in ihrer Form einer klassischen »Futura« von Paul Renner (1878–1956) nachempfunden wurde. Allerdings wurde im Gegensatz zu einer Werksatzschrift die Typometrie, also die Letternarchitektur, in ihrer Proportion speziell für die Dreidimensionalität (also die x, y, z-Koordinatenachsen) angepaßt. Die serifenlosen Majuskeln passen sich somit in Form und Material der farblichen Anmutung und der Lichtreflexion des Stadions bzw. der Umgebung sowie der nächtlichen Lichtinstallation an, insbesondere wenn der Blick seitlich auf den Schriftzug fällt.
Sowohl die ehemalige Beschriftung in einer »Futura Black« – also die nicht mehr existierende »Stadionschrift«, welche damals in Beton gegossen war – als auch die neue Beschriftung des CFS stammen somit aus der gleichen Schriftepoche. Beide Schriften wurden von der Bauhaus-Typographie inspiriert und streng nach den Konstruktionsprinzipien »Kreis und Gerade« geschnitten, was dem Zweckbau und der nächtlichen Lichtinstallation des CFS sehr entgegenkommt – und vielleicht sogar auch eine Art typographischer Tradition des CFS darstellt.
The design brief was to find a lettering as well as the lettering of the entrances made of profile letters in the form of a technically modern and energetically sustainable illuminated lettering (at least 80% savings with the same brightness) for the exterior lettering of the Augsburg Curt-Frenzel Stadium (CFS) in the course of the modernization (conversion of the open stadium into an indoor arena). The Curt-Frenzel Stadium is both the winter sports center of the city of Augsburg and a stadium of the German Ice Hockey League, where the ice hockey club »Augsburger Panther« plays its home games.
The stadium is named in memory of the publisher of the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung »Curt Frenzel« (1900-1970), who was chairman of the Augsburger Eislaufverein (AEV) for many years and a great supporter of ice hockey in Augsburg. The stadium was named after him in 1971. The CFS is operated by the city of Augsburg.
The CFS is a sober, simple industrial building. The exterior forms of the stadium are primarily based on the geometric shapes of triangles and squares. The same applies to the structure of the exterior cladding as well as to the night-time lighting installation and the resulting visible mounting grid beneath the then transparent exterior cladding.
The new CFS typeface consists of majuscules of a constructed grotesque, the form of which was modeled on a classic »Futura« by Paul Renner (1878-1956). However, in contrast to a factory typeface, the typometry, i.e. the letter architecture, has been specially adapted in its proportions for three-dimensionality (i.e. the x, y, z coordinate axes). The form and material of the sans serif majuscules thus adapt to the color impression and the light reflection of the stadium and its surroundings as well as the nocturnal light installation, especially when the lettering is viewed from the side.
Both the former lettering in »Futura Black« – i.e. the no longer existing »stadium lettering«, which was cast in concrete at the time – and the new CFS lettering therefore come from the same typeface era. Both fonts were inspired by Bauhaus typography and cut strictly according to the design principles of “circle and straight line”, which is very much in keeping with the functional building and the night-time lighting installation of the CFS – and perhaps even represents a kind of typographic tradition of the CFS.
